Is it really because we fear the end of democracy?
In the novel I am writing, the protagonist, a preacher of rather progressive and unconventional thought (yes, he is a bit biographical) is reading a novel set in the era of jimcrow Alabama, where it chronicles some horrible things Klansmen do and say, and yet he marvels at their code of honor and respect, especially for the dead, but also towards their fellow klansmen.
“The chapter went on, but the secretary said there was a visitor, so he put it away. It struck him, as vile as the racist haters were, they still made a big deal out of honor and especially honoring the dead. He wondered how wrong someone could be and still feel righteous. It scared him to think about that, not only because it creeped him out a bit to think people who were clearly evil could see themselves as just, but more importantly, if they could be so certain they were right, how could he be certain he was good and moral? What if he was as misguided as they were?”
At the time I was writing it, it did not occur to me, but given the conversations I have had with some Trumpers, the following is playing in my mind.
What if a truly progressive president was elected with a majority of liberals in both houses and had, in his first term managed to stack the court with progressive minded jurists. If he started his second term by using Executive orders to restore student loan forgiveness, paired with declaring all higher ed to be at no cost to the students, declare a single payer system the law of the land, create a new agency to redirect housing assistance to focus on helping low income people buy their own homes, announces a “moonshot” to build 10 million new affordable houses, etc., declare both all parts of the queer community to be protected under the non-discrimination laws, and to declare abortion to be basic healthcare. If the new administration used ECs to advance the entire progressive agenda, would we say he/she was shredding the constitution? Would we say, I agree with what they want to do, but their methods make them fascist, and I would vote for a traditional republican to stop this destruction of America.
I don’t know that I would see it that way. I know President Biden did push certain things, in fact, most presidents have, at least since FDR. I still think Trump/Musk & co. are literally Nazis, but I wonder if I agreed with his end goals, which so many of our conservative neifghbors and relatives do, would I object to his process so much as to resist him?
