(a continuing series)
ANTHONY WATKINS – Socio-economics, Tallahassee, FL, USA
Next time you are in a drive thru or a sit down restaurant and the service is slow and maybe the food isn’t as good as it should be, please don’t think,
“Oh, they just can’t get anybody to work, anymore.”
Prices are up but the staff still makes less than a livable wage. Oddly, Profits are up, too.
There actually are lots of people who would work in food service, at a livable wage.
Average wage for servers is about $14 per hour. Given most places will not schedule wait staff full time, that works out to under $25k and no benefits.
A livable wage in most of America is $70,000 – $100,000 per family per year.
Asking people to hustle and deal with the public and still not be able to take care of their own family is unrealistic.
Too bad we haven’t figured that out yet….
